4. Résumé officiel / abstract

This paper is intended to draw attention to the problem of academic plagiarism and its paticular manifestation on business courses delivered in students' second languages - a popular course provision amongst international Business Schools in France where the author lives and works. The paper defines various types of plagiarism and provides a synthesis of current thought on the extent and solution to the problem with a particular focus on business education. The paper is intended as a prelude to some research amongst French business schools delivering business courses in English to non-native speakers of the language. This student group would include both home (French) and overseas students. The research will attempt to discover the extent of the problem from a teacher perspective and also seek student and teacher views on its ethical aspects. The ultimate aim is to provide a good practice guideline which takes account of the particular environment of the French Education system. There is considerable convergence of opinion taking place amongst those who have already undertaken studies of this subject, which suggests that student learning and assessment and the models of course delivery are significant factors to be considered when introducing measures to prevent plagiarism. This will be a particular focus of the research. Finally, the idea of an institutional policy is discussed along with a review of methods to both detect and prevent plagiarism.
